In US soap operas like Friends, we often hear about girls, after a one night stand, needing the men to phone them and maintain some contact, or else they get very angry; obviously, Assange did not take this to heart. If he had taken the trouble to do this with Miss W, then she would not have become anxious and started chasing him down, only to discover his relationship with Miss A, and the two girls got together and accused this two-timing paramoor of sexual assault, on the ground that he refused to use a condom with Miss W and used a defective condom with Miss A.
It is very understandable that the Swedish police originally did not want to pursue the case - it was just too hilarious - but as Assange's notoriety spread, the police guys must have found the chance to grab a big fish, and get 15 minutes of fame, too hard to pass up; I doubt their primiary consideration was to appease State Department and CIA, but of course the Swedish central government would have quietly whispered to the local police that they consider prosecuting Assange to be a good thing.
In the mean time, I commend Miss A and Miss W for striking a blow for neglected one-night stand women everywhere, besides helping US government to maintain property rights over information...
In passing, I mention that like Assange, I have an Australian passport though lived overseas for many years; the way Australia stood up for his residential rights is very assuring; if he had taken a longer flight from Sweden (short of money to buy a more expensive ticket?) to Australia instead of UK, he would not be in fear of extradition now; he might still beat the rap because of the weak evidence, but given his celebrity status, the chance to take a bite out of him is going to be very tempting wherever he goes.
(Australia allowed McRea to be extradited, but that is a much more serious case and Singapore side had to agree not to seek the death penalty
